IN SORROWS FLAME *

My photo book explores grief, and the images in it evoke complex emotions grief may bring; the purpose is to get audiences to take the time to allow themselves to feel the harsh emotions grief brings instead of avoiding them. I was inspired to do this project as my great-grandad passed away in October 2021, and I remember how difficult it was. I felt I couldn’t grieve because I had things to worry about, such as my A-level exams in a couple of months and mock exams around the corner.

Although this book was inspired by grieving due to death, it is not limited to it, and what I was experiencing at the time, I believe many others have experienced, too. I have looked into various cultures and practices people do when grieving. I have also looked into the process, which plays a small part in the narrative of my photo book, which is that the uncomfortable pain and complex emotions are part of your journey. When you follow the light, you will realise that you feel the way you do because you love the person/place/thing that is no longer with you, but the important thing is that you care and that they/it matters to you.
